Interview

Magdalena’s Mediterranean dreamscape

Magdalena Wosinska emerged from the skateboarding and metal scene, where she picked up photography shooting her friends. Her style and talents have translated into editorial work all over the world. I remember walking into the subway in Istanbul where I used to live and recognising her work on a Converse ad translated into Turkish. Despite being a prolific professional, she continues to travel and amass incredible personal series. We chat about her recent sailing trip across the Mediterranean.

Where were you born?

Katowice, Poland

When did you start taking photos?

When I was about 14

Has travel always been a big part of your life?

Ever since I could remember!

I like hanging at home, gardening, making crafts, cooking, going on hikes, playing music, working on my Chevelle and enjoying time with friends when all the work is done!

Your portfolio is a roller coaster. You’ve travelled extensively through America, Europe, and Africa shooting motorcycles, parties, rockstars, and half the people are naked. It looks like you’re living the dream. What’s a regular day for you?

Haha well, when I’m not traveling I’m catching up doing tedious office work, updating sites, writing treatments for jobs, editing film, working on personal books. When all thats done… I like hanging at home, gardening, making crafts, cooking, going on hikes, playing music, working on my Chevelle and enjoying time with friends when all the work is done!

How has your approach or style developed from your early personal work, since starting to shoot professionally?

Well it’s funny, nothing has really changed much besides who I shoot and where I am but it’s kinda always been the same style. It evolves due to its surroundings or the needs clients have but I’m very lucky in a way, where I get hired for what I do, not for me to shoot something differently than I would.

What’s the story behind the trip through the Mediterranean? Are you a seasoned sailor?

Oh I wish. That was a life changing time with two wonderful women and their amazing father who are dear friends of mine. They are sailors but it was a first for me to be out at sea for two weeks. The best way to explore any coast on a magic carpet ride!

Did you come up against any difficulties? Seasickness? Rough seas? Sharks?

Nothing. It was absolutely perfect at all times…

If you could go anywhere for your next trip, where would it be?

Vietnam, Turkey and Madagascar are my 3 picks.

How do you see your style evolving in the future. What kind of photos will you be taking when you’re fifty?

I’ll see to that when I’m fifty :)
