Even when I’m at my lowest – pushing my bike up a 10% grade mountain, muscles screaming with pain into a valley headwind, I think, “Wow Josh, if you could only see yourself right now. This is ridiculous.” And then I stop, look around and laugh about it.

Follow photographer, Charles Bergquist as he takes a trip out to Joshua Tree for the Perseid meteor shower. The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity between 9 and 14 August, depending on the particular location of the stream. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour.

I really like being alone, some people may say a little too much (I tend to disagree) whether I’m cracking tinnies on an empty beach in the middle of nowhere, singing at the top of my lungs (extremely badly) or dancing in front of the neighbors cat.

Do I have a home? It’s hard to say. I live in a 1976 bus named Sunshine with my boyfriend James. We sleep near serrated edges of young mountain ranges. We bathe in trickles of cold desert rivers.

“Get down! You are in GRAVE DANGER!” a faraway voice yelled over a loudspeaker. I looked inland to see the red-blue flash of police lights as we hurried down the icy bank toward our vehicle. Luckily the officer wasn’t there when we arrived and drove to the end of the peninsula covered in ice. I was hyperaware of the lake water on either side of us, and of inescapable doom if we misstepped and fell in.

I make an effort to let everyone I photograph know what I’m up to. I want them to understand where I am coming from. I think when they meet me they realise I’m not out to expose or judge them. Who am I to expose something or someone anyway?
We’re really doing it: If you wanna be dumb you gotta be tough
I think they know there’s no sense in trying to talk us out of them. I had people try and talk me out of the bike one, but after that they all seemed to just express concern, no one really threw down any ultimatums. But that may change now that we almost killed ourselves on the last one. That one was a game changer.
